A Short Biography
|
I think every artist is strongest when speaking from their own experiences, and my growing up in Africa is obvious in my art. My folks were missionaries so I was born in Nigeria. We also lived in Sudan, and after college I worked in Egypt and the West Bank. I grew up viewing my art as a hobby and never pursued it with much intentionality. Drawing was an acceptable way to spend a Saturday morning, but what good did it do the world? In the back of my mind I could allow for someone arguing that beauty enriches our lives, but I wouldn't allow myself to indulge such a lifestyle. Even though people voice an appreciation for my art I have tended to minimize it's worth in day-to-day life and pushed it onto the back burner of my schedule. Gradually, I am embracing it in my life and enjoying the added flavor. |
